Cloud technology has become cheaper and easy to work with nowadays. The brand new start-ups which are forming nowadays are finding intelligent ways of using these tools to provide satisfaction to their customers.
In the “cloud storage”, three prolific technologies have come out which are quite similar in their names but vary differently in their usage and the value they provide to customers.
- Online Backup
- Online File Storage.
- Online Archiving
Now let us check out the difference between these cloud technologies
Online File Storage
This is the most commonly used technology for cloud storage. It almost resembles to have a hard drive on the internet. This authorizes you to preserve files, and securely access them from any computer, anywhere in the world.
One more great feature of online file storage is the technology called “Internet hard drive” where files can be accessed by other people too.
Before this technology, people heavily used NAS devices. But with the invent of the technology of online file storage has become simply more convenient.
Also some people use their hosting account as an online file storage device, but this could be insecure and usually against the rules and regulations.
Online backup is one more technology cloud.
Although, it is made to copy user data to another location to remove any chances of loss. But what difference does it makes is the property it has that it retains “versions” of your data files.
This authorizes you to “roll back” if you ever upload a corrupted file.
An user can use both the online backup as well as online storage in conjunction as they both serve different purposes. Online file storage is for storing/sharing data, and the other is for protecting data.
This is another technology from this category and often is poorly understood because it has less users. It is mostly baught by large companies those who need to take care of large amount of data. (Ex: Email Servers)
Users in digital photography or video production profession, mostly produce a lot of large data files. They fill up their hard drive very easily so they need some extra space.
Photographers , may need this type of maintenance on a monthly basis. But for a large company that produce terabytes of business monthly, this can become a full-time job.
In addition to taking inactive data off of production equipment, companies are also bound by special laws that force them to retain this data for several years, and ensure that it can be quickly searched at a moment’s notice.
Online archiving is not anything that a user will start using at their home. But it’s still better to know how it is different from online file storage and online backup.
There are some other methods of storing data in the cloud, and new concepts are being introduced every day by intelligent tech start-ups like Server replication, virtualization, etc .
But these 3 categories continue to be dominant when it comes to managing data through online storage devices.
