Google offers a hosted solution for email, calendar and chat for schools through G Suite for Education, an integrated communication and collaboration solution. The best part is that Google provides this service free of cost as a way to give back to the educational community. They provide with 24/7 support without any ads and the data is yours. It is similar to a normal Gmail account with the addition of a new service exclusive for G Suite for Education known as Classroom.
Google Classroom is mission control for any student or teacher. You can create classes, schedules, assignments, send feedback and see everything in one place. A teacher can create a class very easily and can then add students by sending them the class code or add them directly. They can then create assignments and distribute a copy to each student in the class and can also keep track of who has completed it and who’s still working on it. Students are given reminders for submission dates, tests and even homework. They are also given the choice to interact with their teacher privately if they have any doubts or questions. Everything updates in real time. After an assignment is complete, simply click on the Turn In option to submit it. You can also attach any Google Docs, Drive files, links and even photos.
Users are given unlimited storage for Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. Additional services such as YouTube, Maps and Blogger can be turned on by the school’s domain administrator if they feel they need it for educational purposes. Also, Google provides their archive solution Google Vault for free which is an amazing add on. When you open G Suite for education, you are prompted to select a school type:
- Primary/Secondary Education: Includes preschool, elementary, middle, and high school, as well as school districts with only these types of school. You should select this option if your students are primarily under the age of 18.
- Higher Education: Includes vocational schools, colleges, and post-graduate institutions. You should select this option if your students are over 18.
Google offers many resources, such as Help Centers and online presentations in our G Suite Learning Center, to help you train your users to use G Suite. G Suite for Education has helped many schools and is a great tool to keep all assignments and records collectively on the cloud.
